It was a long and unsatisfying first day at the 2021 Sherman Hoyt Trophy at the Ted Turner Sailing '60 Sailing Pavilion at the Edgewood Yacht Club. Competitors arrived to a better than forecasted N/NE breeze that completely died halfway through race 1A which was abandoned. From noon until 4:30pm everyone was held on land until a S/SE breeze filled in. Once everyone was back on the water, one race in each division was sailed in a 4-5 knot dying E/SE breeze. Race 2A was abandoned halfway through once the breeze died once again.
Thanks to our Judges Abigayle Konys '19 and Gabe Hannon '20, NEISA Rep Mike Kalin, and all of the Brown sailors who helped out. A and B divisions will switch fleets for Sunday and we may modify the rotation a bit to maximize racing with a better forecast.
Day 2 of the Sherman Hoyt Trophy was a perfect day for racing with N/NW winds of 8-16 knots that went more west as the day went on. Sunny with temps in the 70's and very shifty and puffy conditions. We modified the rotation to rotate every 3 races and maximize racing with A-division in Z420s and B-division in FJs. 8 races were sailed in each division on W3, W4, and W5 courses on Sunday. The racing was extremely tight and it came down to the last race, race 9B for the top overall results and the last qualifying spots for the ACC qualifier. Congratulations to Harvard on the win, edging out Brown in the last minutes of the final beat. The top 14 teams qualified for the ACC Qualifiers on October 9-10.
A huge thanks to all of the Brown sailors who helped out and to our judges Abigayle Konys (Brown '19) and Gabe Hannon (Brown '20) for judging on-the-water throughout the event and keeping the competitor's in check. A few breakdowns occurred for broken jib halyards in the FJs and breakdown points were awarded.
