The 2021 SAISA Women's Open saw a steady 5-6 knot northerly in the morning with a slight flood / nearly slack tide that allowed us to promptly get in a full A & B Division set in the morning. A division got their 3rd & 4th races in right before the tide really began to ebb... Then it felt like groundhog day as the northerly once again died and we saw Poseidon's Treadmill re-emerge (same exact situation as yesterday at SAISA North Points #3 out of Daniel Island). Our sailing area right off of The Charleston Battery allowed for great current relief all day, but the breeze shifted just far enough right to the point that we were forced to put the windward mark in a spot that had it poking into The Cooper River. Several boats finished before the breeze fully shut off and the rest of the fleet was in the driver seat of the struggle bus trying to get around that final windward mark. The RC apologizes for forcing the B Division ladies through that final 3rd race, but it did make for some great spectating and I'm sure no one sailing in it will ever forget it. We were able to finish after a few shots of breeze luckily came through the windward mark area allowing the last several boats to round the windward mark & offset. And of course a beautiful 12 knot SW Sea Breeze filled in right after we wrapped up at 3:15pm. Congrats to USF on the win, CofC for finishing 2nd & Jacksonville rounding out the podium in 3rd.
Thank you to Charleston Community Sailing for letting us use their fleet. Shout out to Citadel cadets Neil Walters, King Bland, Lewis Bragg & Malcolm McAlister for helping move marks around, transporting sailors/coaches from CCS to the race area & running races all day.
