Fall Pacific Coast Championship

Summary

Saturday, November 16:

It was a beautiful November day in Santa Barbara once again for the Fall Pacific Coast Collegiate Sailing Conference Championship. The sailors were greeted by cloudless skies and an early sea breeze build that allowed for racing to being promptly at 11am. The wind started off shifting between 195 and 215 degrees and was 4-5 knots, but within a couple of races, it had increased to 8-10 knots from approximately 220 degrees. There were still plenty of shifts, but as the day settled in, it became fairly steady and allowed the race committee to move relatively swiftly through the rotations. Around 3:45pm the wind died off quickly but stayed at a course axis of 220 degrees and just above the wind limit. Assuming it was unlikely to get more than a 6th B division race off, C fleet was sent in. At about 4:05pm, the wind began to fill again surprisingly from the west allowing for a great 6th B division race. One request for redress due to a breakdown was filed, but ultimately dropped before it went to a hearing.

The PCCSC held a scheduling meeting at 5:30pm at SBYC securing a calendar for 2020. Thank you to the SBYC (always an amazing source of regatta support), Kent Pierce, the UCSB sailing team for running the JV course, and the SBYSF high school sailors for providing mark set (specifically Colin Martz, Catalina Matlock, Hope Campbell, and Hudson Mayfield).

UCSB holds the lead on both the Varsity and JV Course with Stanford, USC, Hawaii, and Cal Maritime close behind.

Sunday, November 17:

Another beautiful day in Santa Barbara, but much hotter (88 degrees) and with less wind predicted. Surprisingly wind came up right on cue at approximately 10:30am and an impromptu hold on shore was quickly sent out sailing. The breeze was unstable with large shifts and micro puffs blowing through quickly. It was realistic to see 5 knots and 12 knots from different directions a mere 20 yards away from each other. The volatile conditions made it difficult to keep a perfectly square course, but even with 20-30 degree shifts, the angle generally was okay to the windward mark. It did however make for some harder starts with one end of the line being favored by a lot at times. Eventually the wind settled in somewhat consistently around 225 degrees, but as the day progressed a mountain breeze blew offshore causing 45 degree right shifts and quickly dying breeze. Ultimately, the course had to be moved off shore due to lack of water space and in an attempt to get into the sea breeze more. The sea breeze did fill one more time, though still with huge righties from the mountains, allowing the race committee to complete a 7th and 8th C fleet race. There was one prostest filed resulting in a disqualification of UCI in race 8C. Two requests for redress were filed with one being denied and one being granted average points in races 7C and 8C.

Thank you to the Santa Barbara Yacht Club, the UCSB sailing team, Kent Pierce and Chewy, and the SBYSF high school sailors for providing mark set (specifically Colin Martz, Catalina Matlock, Hope Campbell, and Hudson Mayfield).

Congratulation to the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos on winning the Fall Pacific Coast Championship on both courses!

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
