Moody Trophy

The Moody participants towed to the course after a quick meeting in hopes of getting a set in the dying NW breeze. Good try, but no luck. 1A was started, then abandoned. Then they waited. After a long wait A was sent ashore and B sent out as a light SE breeze began to fill. Racing began around noon with the SE breeze becoming S and building to 12 before tapering off towards the end of our 6:00 PM cut off time. BU got off to a fast start with URI in chase. Rotations afloat via Whalers went swiftly and 6B and 5A races were sailed. BU leads with URI 2nd followed by Harvard and Brown. 3 of the 4 leaders are Club Sports teams! Skip Whyte was PRO with Ally Kramer scoring and Mike Dunleavy as mark set. A host of URI undergrads led by captain Ian Nannig managed the shuttle service to Camp Fuller, the Gardiner Island venue and temporary floating dock. The weather was beautiful with bright sunshine and warm temperatures. ICSA rep Kevin Coackley of Harvard headed a protest committee of other coaches and heard one protest which was disallowed. Miami of Ohio was a No Show.

Bright sun and almost no wind at reporting time. Following a brief demonstration of URI's new roll tack and jibe simulator a light NW breeze filled and the fleet towed to the race area with A Division planning for 6A to catch up plus a normal 7-8A set. 6A started but the breeze immediately collapsed and the fleet relaxed in delightful but windless conditions for about an hour. The Salt Pond seabreeze marched in at 7+ knots and racing go going. The breeze built gradually to 12+ and 4A and 3B races were sailed before the 3:00PM cutoff. BU and URI continued to lead the way with Yale solid in 3rd. Tufts rose to 4th with solid performances in both divisions aided by a loaner crew in A due to illness. Racing was extremely close all day with stacked up weather mark roundings and photo finishes. One protest was heard resulting in a DSQ that had been a 1st. Congratulations to the Terriers for their wire to wire win. The Rhody Rams finally got onto the podium in their home event behind a Division winning performance in B. Coach Skip Whyte was PRO and was most capably assisted by scorer Ally Kramer, Mike Dunleavy on Mark Set and Eddie Gary and Ryan Palardy manning the rotation boats. Additional thanks to John Mollicone for taking over ICSA rep responsibilities and organizing the jury.
