Six schools from all over Florida gathered for a double-header weekend of sailing, SP-2 on Saturday and SP-3 on Sunday. Sunday's SP-3 regatta was hosted in a better than expected 8 knot easterly with some nice wave action at USF. Counting the Varsity, JV, and Women's teams, there were a total of 11 teams entered. To maximize the number of races, A and B divisions sailed combined, with a Bye in each set per division.
Six very good races were sailed, averaging 16-18 minutes in length, all W4's. Several showers then developed over Tampa Bay, resulting in a parade for the final legs of Race 7. After that a 90+ degree shift meant a full reset of the course for an attempted Race 8 but then, as expected, a complete post-rain shutdown of the breeze. Race 8 was abandoned and the fleet was towed in to end the regatta.
Many thanks to Kevin Reali from Eckerd for bringing his own support boat, and to Alan Capellin coed coach at USF for the onshore prep work and running the mark set / support boat for the other coaches.
Congratulations to Eckerd who finished strong for a narrow victory over the Jacksonville team.
