2017 SAISA-MAISA SailPack Women's Regatta

Summary

Saturday, September 16:

Saturday morning welcomed racers from SAISA and MAISA to Raleigh with hospitality, warm weather, and sunny skies...but not much wind. Following an opening ceremony and skippers' meeting, competitors enjoyed a little extra time for bagels, muffins, and other breakfast refreshments while waiting for the wind to arrive. After about a 40-minute delay, race committee officials were able to get racing underway in a building, yet shifty, northerly on Lake Crabtree.

Early success depended on connecting the puffs as the morning wind filled in slowly. The Fins from Jacksonville got off to a quick start, joined by the College of Charleston Cougars and home-team NC State Wolfpack in A fleet, as Georgia Tech's B fleet took the division lead in the first race and didn't let go all day. With sailors on a W5 course, several close upwind finishes made for exciting racing. By early afternoon more consistent breeze filled in and cloud cover helped cool off a very warm September day. A-fleet was won by the College of Charleston who competed closely with Univ. of South Carolina women throughout the day. Spectators were treated to a fierce battle for 3rd position with 4 different teams within just 4 points of the podium with UGA securing the final podium spot. In B-fleet Georgia Tech's women took the lead on the first race and held it despite a late push by the Cougars. Overall, the regatta winner is the College of Charleston, followed by Georgia Tech and Jacksonville University to round out the podium. Special thanks to SailPack alumnus David Rogers, senior Andrew Edwards for their indefatigable work on Race Committee, working to get races underway despite shifty conditions; and also thanks to SailPack junior Adam Augustine for his work in the mark boat keeping the course square over the span of the day. Congrats to the College of Charleston on the regatta win.

On Sunday following the regatta, 25 women college sailors for both SAISA and MAISA conferences participated in a racing clinic hosted by NC State and led by Jacksonville U head coach Jon Faudree and long-time friend of the SailPack and CofC Sailing alumnae Laura Doupnik. Participants started with a chalk-talk on shore covering key boat-handling skills, sail control, weight distribution, and downwind racing strategy. Then sailors got on the water for nearly three hours of drills. Overall it was a great learning opportunity for sailors, both experienced and in the process of building their women's sailing program. Special thanks to Jon and Laura for sharing their expertise and experience with us. Photos from both the regatta and clinic will be available online at: go.ncsu.edu/Sailing and Facebook soon.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
