Philly Fleet Race

Today was a perfect day for college racing at Corinthian Yacht Club of Philadelphia, home to Penn, Villanova and Drexel and 12 different high school sailing teams and the site of the Philly Fleet Race. Winds were from the north and northeast with an average of 4 oscillations per windward leg. For half of the day we sailed with the current flowing (with us on the windward leg), and after a lunch break where hamburgers and hot dogs were provided by the club we sailed the balance of the day with the current ebbing (against us on the windward.) We sailed 10 W4s, 3 W5s and one W3 to end the day.

9 schools participated in the event which used the "Arrigan" format with A and B sailing together in an 18 boat fleet. Thanks to graduate advisor Skip Swikart and Penn alum Mark Penny for getting off 14 great races and also huge thanks to Jeff Proko from Drexel and several Penn and Drexel sailors who volunteered as mark and safety boats.

With a forecast of unsailable conditions on Sunday until the mid afternoon it was decided to call the regatta at the end of the day.

Congratulations to Villanova on winning the event and to Penn and Drexel for finishing in 2nd and 3rd, respectively.

Due to poor weather conditions, the regatta was finished on Saturday. No races were attempted on Sunday.
