MAISA Match Race Championship

The fleet of 8 teams battled light, shifty winds over the course of the day, as did the race committee. Numerous course changes were made, reacting to shifts and lengthening and shortening the courses as needed. Racing was very tight, with good boat- and sail-handling by all teams. A full round-robin was completed (28 races over 10 flights), deciding the top four teams that will race tomorrow in the semi-final knockout round and the final knockout round. Each of these rounds will be a first to 2 points knockout.

Congratulations to St. Mary's College of MD (Alex Curtiss, Jonathan Lutz, Patrick Tara and Grace Papp) and congratulations to regatta repeat winner, Georgetown University (Nevin Snow, AJ Reiter, Meaghan Macrae and Campbell D'Eliscu) as they move on to compete at the ICSA Match Race National Championship. Sail fast and smart!

Today's racing was in a southwesterly breeze, that continuously built and shifted right to a little north of west. In the semi-finals, Georgetown defeated NY Maritime 2-0 and St. Mary's defeated USMMA Kings Point 2-0. In the petit-finals (consolation round for 3rd / 4th place), USMMA Kings Point defeated NY Maritime 2-1 settling a local "grudge-match" in very tight racing. In the finals, Georgetown defeated St. Mary's 2-0.

The fleet of Sonars provided by USMMA Kings Point are an excellent platform for this event; evenly matched and great boats for match racing. Special thanks to TJ Shea (PRO), Larry Kennedy (Mark set), Eric Johnson (Chief Umpire), John Mooney (Umpire), Bam Miller (Umpire), Bill Siener (Umpire), Anne Mooney (Umpire) and Chris Poole (Umpire) as well as the USMMA midshipmen for all their hard work to make this another great event.
