The 74th annual Schell Trophy honors the MIT Professor who first had the notion to start this sport of collegiate dinghy sailing in 1935 and replicate the frostbite dinghy races which were then being held in Providence, RI. After appealing to the alumni and the President of MIT and hiring Jack Wood as the first Sailing Master, the plan was executed. In 1936 MIT had a new sailing facility with 35 new tech dinghies built by the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co in Bristol, RI.
A frustrating day for sailors and race management on the Charles River. A west wind pulsed in occasionally from the W and the SW with some dramatically sticky holes. At least nine races were abandoned when the first beat turned into a fetch or the breeze entirely evaporated.
BC and Harvard lead the crowd but there will be many more races on Sunday to flush out the Fall Championship of New England with an early report time of 9am. Many thanks to the MIT students who assisted with the race management: Sameena Shaffeeullah, Chris Ford, Scarlett Kohler, Thatcher Chamberlain, and Alex Bost.
Franny Charles MIT Sailing Master
Today's wind was from the SSW at 6-14 knots. Congratulations to Boston University, winning the Schell Trophy for the first time since 1985 when they won with a team led by Brad Read and Ben Cesare. This year was one of the closest Schell Trophies in recent memory, with teams trading places right up until the last race, including Boston University coming from behind for the win in race 12 B.
Sailing Master Fran Charles ran 10 races in each division, the maximum allowed per day by NEISA regulations. He was assisted by MIT students with the race management: Sameena Shaffeeullah, Chris Ford, Scarlett Kohler, Joe Paggi, ands Noa Yoder. Also assisting were 3 time Schell Trophy champion Terry Cromberg, Mark DeShong and Wally Corwin. Spencer Powers and Mark DeShong heard and granted 2 breakdown requests.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
