Yngling Coed Olympians @ SRU

NEISA sailors met at the Waterfront Center in Newport, Rhode Island at 9:30 AM and a competitor's meeting was held around 9:45 AM. Saturday's weather conditions greeted 6 teams to a light northeasterly breeze of 3-5 knots and a strong ebbing tide making it difficult for some teams to get to the starting line on time. Nine races were completed with no breakdowns or protests recorded.

Sunday's racing began with only slightly more breeze, and the same strong current, but it was unpredictably more shifty. With only 3 races left to complete in the 12 race series, it came down to a battle between Tufts, Roger Williams, and Yale. Salve had an outside chance to move up to second, but fouled Roger Williams in the second race resulting in a painful 720 after the start and thereby foiling their chances. In the third and final race of the day, the all women's team from Maine Maritime surprised the rest of the fleet with a great start and convincing speed winning the race by half a leg! Congratulations to Roger Williams for the victory, and special thanks to former Olympian and US Sailing Team Member Debbie Capozzie and former Olympian Tom Brown, for their assistance on both days with course management in some very trying conditions.
