Warm, well relative to yesterday it was balmy, temps started the day. At the competitors meeting the History of the Wellahan Trophy which is typically held at So.Maine, was shared. It will return to So. Maine when their team reorganizes. The UNH Wildcats were honored to host the event for So. Maine.
Breeze from the West started the day. Velocity ranged from 10-15mph with oscillations making the windward mark a crazy place to live. Gusts recorded between 15 - 20mph sent many sailors flying downwind and some of the best capsize and death roll recoveries were a spectacle to teams on shore. One turtled boat recovered and raced to the finish only losing two boats in the process! 5 races in each division were sailed.
Amherst was a no show. There was one filed protest resulting in a Tufts DSQ. There were several port starboard situations that were hailed but the offending team didn't spin. That was disappointing as honour and fair sailing was repeated at the competitors meeting.
Thanks to Wildcats Emily Peabody and Emily Chase for pulling some hair out with Techscore and managing the anchor and various and sundry other tasks. Thanks to the Wildcats who on their offset managed shore operations and super thanks to Ben Dominguez Middlebury coach and Jason Leach UNH assistant coach who helped with mark movement and crash boat supervision and dock repair.
Congratulations to Tufts and Bates who won Reece's. The Northeastern Huskies tied with the BU Terriers for The Wellehan Trophy. The tie breaker went to Northeastern.
