Pine Trophy

Summary

Saturday, September 8:

Named for Vice Admiral James Pine, Superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy when the Jacobs Rock sailing facility was built prior to World War II, the event began in 1943 as the International Star Class Championship of the Intercollegiate Yacht Racing Association. The US Coast Guard Academy had a fleet of stars at the time and the event was listed as an “official ICYRA Championship, similar to the McMillan Cup and was held in Stars until 1953. From 1954-1976 it was and "All-Star" team race between NEISA and MAISA, sailed in Ravens and then Shields. For the next eleven years, the format was match racing. In 1988, it reverted to fleet racing, in J22s. Coast Guard and at least four other NEISA teams are chosen to compete, with unfilled other District berths going to additional NEISA teams.

Exciting start to the day with a Colgate dismasting during the preamble. A steady Southerly at 8-14 knots settled in for the morning as crews were challenged and had to quickly adjust their spinnaker work to the building conditions. The breeze continued to build through the lunch hour at 16-32 knots. Seven races were completed racing continues tomorrow at 10:00AM.

Many thanks to the coaches from MIT and Roger williams for hearing protests. Special appreciation to Dockmaster RJ Burns for the breakdown assist and all the Coast Guard Cadets on Race Committee.

Sunday, September 9:

The wind was the polar opposite from yesterday NNW at 4-6 knots at the start with the pressure steadily declining throughout the race. The AP flag was posted shortly after the conclusion of race 8. The pressure retuned shortly after lunch racing resumed in a steady NNW 5-7 knots. Congratulations to the Yale Bulldogs for winning the 2012 Pine Trophy.

Score history

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
