After a sunny delay onshore until noon, clouds moved in and a light but steady SE breeze filled in at 4-7 knots. The breeze slowly shifted right during the afternoon, with RC rotating the WL course twice. Four races in each division were accomplished before time ran out.
Low tide occurred midway through the racing, so while current wasn't as strong as racing at mid-tide, teams did have to deal with a changeover and plan accordingly. Based on the course position, some gains could be made in the first set by sailing in current on the outgoing tide to the upwind mark and trying to avoid it downwind (reversing the strategy in the second set). It's unclear how many boats discovered this and used it to their advantage.
Water temp was a balmy 56 degrees, while the air temp was 45 at noontime. One DSQ via three-minute justice; no breakdowns. MMA and McGill did not show; Colby, Holy Cross and MSM received the 20-pt-per-division penalty for failure to sign the RP form.
Much thanks to Diana Weidenbacher for running efficient RC all day, and to USM Alums Ben Converse and Sarah Demerest for helping out on short notice. The competitors raced well and managed quick rotations, which allowed for the two full sets. Nice to see three former SailMaine high school sailors come home and compete for Amherst, Middlebury and Tufts!
