While rain enveloped most of the New York Metropolitan Area, conditions over our sailing venue in Western Long Island Sound & Eastchester Bay ranged from sunny to cloudy throughout the day. Sailors from 12 schools were greeted with New York City's and thus the World's Greatest Bagels and plain, scallion and veggie cream cheese from H&H Bagels on Second Avenue in Manhattan. At lunchtime, Morris Yacht & Beach Club provided a snack bar of salads, burgers, clam chowder, etc., at reasonable prices for competitors and guests.
Eight A Division and six B Division races were sailed in an oscillating northwest breeze of 5-10 mph. When racing was over for the day, five schools were in serious contention for the historic Jesuit Cup.
The remaining 10 races were completed under a beautiful, sunny sky and a south - southeast wind that built from five to 15 mph with higher gusts throughout the day. Racing concluded at 2:40 PM and with the New York City skyline in the background, sailors and guests assembled on the Morris Yacht & Beach Club lawn for a slice of Zagat's rated, "New York City's Best Cheesecake" from S&S Bakery in the Bronx, and the awards ceremony.
Congratulations to the Tufts' Jumbos for winning the regatta and being the first non-Jesuit school since the event was inaugurated in 1955 to have its name inscribed on the original Jesuit Cup.
Hamilton & Loyola were "No shows."
Kudos to the several sailors from Columbia and Fordham, who staffed the safety boats; kept the boat rotations moving expeditiously; posted the results on Tech Score in a timely fashion, and made sure that all competitors were well fed. Thank you all.
