Sound Invitational, SS 6

Summary

Saturday, October 23:

Thirteen races in a combined division, no rotation format were completed in a West-Northwest breeze that shifted towards the West as the day went on. Races ranged in length from 15 to 18 minutes, with the races averaging 16-and-one-half minutes. Sailing took place outside Granite Cove in Long Island Sound. Breeze started out at 12 knots before dying to 8-12 and then building again to 12-14 knots, with the highest recorded puff at 16 knots. The seas were fairly lumpy, with rolling waves early on and steeper, lumpy waves at the end of the day. Windward-leeward twice around courses with an offset were sailed for the first 12 races, while a triangle-windward-leeward was sailed in the final race to take advantage of the building waves and high wind. There was one OCS in race 12 and multiple DNS's. The current made it tough to make the line, with the majority of the fleet consistently three to four boatlengths behind the line at the start. No protests were filed. Congratulations to the Tufts Jumbos for their narrow combined division win over the Brown Bears. Also, congrats to Max Bulger and Sara Makaretz for their overall win. Thanks to Emmet Smith, Yale '09 for his help in the mark boat and the Yale sailors. Massachusetts Maritime Academy was a no-show.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
