SingleHanded New England Qualifiers

Summary

Saturday, October 9:

Sat: The W4 course was set up on Long Island Sound in a WNW breeze of about 10 knots. With the wind swinging in 40 degree phases, course management was difficult. Throw in an increasing breeze with gusts into the mid 20s and a large 3-5 foot rolling chop and it was downright frustrating. Great rides were had by all downwind in the fantastic surfing conditions. We were on the water from 10:30am to 6pm when the tired sailors finally hit the YCYC dock. 9 Races were completed and no protests were filed.

Sun: 9 more races were completed right up to the 4:30 deadline. If you had better sailing conditions then us, then youre lying. Race 1 started in a flood tide with about 5 knots of breeze after 3 practice starts. By the weather mark the wind had increased to 12 knots and by the finish it was a steady 15-18. A short chop slowly formed into 4 to 5 foot waves. Watching these guys sail downwind was really impressive. By the end of the day we were close to the 20 knot range at times.

3 protests were filed resulting in 1 DSQ which decided the last qualifying berth.

Many thanks to The Coast Guard Academy for bringing a coach boat and carrying spare gear on it. Thanks also to our judges Peter Johns and George Crocker.

Congratulations to Cam Cullman from Yale for winning the 2010 NE Mens Singlehanded Championship. Cy Thompson from Roger Williams finished second, Fred Strammer from Brown finished third and Colin Smith also from Brown finished fourth. These four sailors will represent NEISA in the 2010 ICSA Singlehanded National Championship for the Glen S. Foster Trophy in St. Petersburg, FL.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.

The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
