Saturday was a beautiful day of sailing for the 2010 Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men's Single-handed Championship. The fleet headed out to the mouth of the Severn River by Greenbury Point, where a windward leeward course was set. The wind came from the Northwest all day, ranging in velocity from three to ten knots. It was pretty puffy and shifty all day, but we stayed out and ate lunch on the water so we could sail in the good conditions while we had them. Since it was bright and sunny and near 80 degrees on the weekend of the US Sailboat Show, the pleasure boat traffic was significant, and the chop played a factor in the racing most of the afternoon. The tricky conditions meant that everyone had to stay on their toes and even the best sailors were capable of finishing deep in any race. PRO Kyle Assad and his team of Midshipmen did a great job running fair races and 12 races were completed before the wind shut off at the end of the day. Judges Herb Larrabee and Scott Kirwin kept the fleet honest all day on the water and heard one protest after racing, resulting in John Wallace from SMC receiving a DSQ in race 12.
Sunday was another gorgeous day, but there was no wind early on. The fleet headed out in a light Easterly in the morning, but the breeze quickly faded to nothing and we returned to shore for an early lunch break at 1115. A Southeasterly breeze slowly filled in while we were on shore and the fleet was sent back out at 1230. A windward leeward course was set in the mouth of the Severn river off Bembe Beach and the wind settled in at 5-8 knots for some really nice racing in the afternoon. The wind was much steadier than the day before and the fleet enjoyed some good, tight racing. Six more races were completed to finish the rotation.
Congratulations to Georgetown’s Charlie Buckingham for winning the Carl Van Duyne MAISA Men’s Single-handed Championship for the fourth consecutive year and to Cornell’s Phillip Alley, Hobart’s Sam Blouin, and Georgetown’s Chris Barnard who qualified to compete in the Nationals on November 5-7 in St. Petersburg, FL. Thanks to Patagonia for showing their continued support of college sailing by providing a fleece to the winner.

The following chart shows the relative rank of the teams as of the race indicated. Note that the races are ordered by number, then division, which may not represent the order in which the races were actually sailed.
The first place team as of a given race will always be at the top of the chart. The spacing from one team to the next shows relative gains/losses made from one race to the next. You may hover over the data points to display the total score as of that race.
